Programs

At Yellow Brick Road ELC, children learn through play, engage in activities driven by process versus product, participate in outdoor learning, and use a variety of nature-based materials in their classrooms.

INFANT (6 WEEKS to 12 MONTHS):  Our infant classroom follows a responsive, individualized schedule that honors each child’s unique needs for eating, sleeping, and play.  Teachers work with infants to help them meet developmental milestones.  They encourage communication by incorporating the use of sign language with older infants.  Teachers offer a variety of safe, engaging toys that encourage development, soothe during teething, and make learning fun.  Baby food and Similac Advance/Similac Sensitive are provided.

TODDLERS (12-24 MONTHS):  Our Toddler classes provide a stimulating and fulfilling environment, supporting the young child’s need for exploration and emerging drive for independence.  Developmentally appropriate, child-centered activities both indoors and outdoors support active learning and promote children’s progress in all developmental areas, encouraging them to become lifelong learners and building on their natural curiosity. Teachers encourage communication with toddlers using a variety of modalities, including picture cards, sign language, and repetition.

TWOS (2-3 YEARS):  In the two-year old classrooms, children choose activities in developmentally appropriate centers designed to help them learn social/emotional and academic skills.  Teachers foster independence by guiding children in building self-help skills, practicing turn-taking and cooperation, and using their words to communicate.  Teachers develop fine motor and gross motor skills through simple projects and encourage children to be members of a caring community of classmates and caring stewards of the nature around them through regular walks and gardening.

PRE K (3-5 YEARS):  Our Pre K program is a multi-age classroom designed to prepare children for a successful transition to kindergarten while focusing on social and emotional development.  Pre K classes participate in a variety of activities that include morning provocations, circle time, small group time, and center time.  Each class has special learning centers in which children can work alone or in groups to develop math, pre-writing, pre-reading, fine motor, and gross motor skills.  Children learn to work together in a caring classroom community and in their school gardens.  Pre K students participate in regular field trips to Boxerwood Nature Center, Heritage Hall Retirement Community, the Rockbridge County Regional Library, and Kids Playce playground.

All YBR classrooms participate in on-site, bi-weekly yoga and music classes supporting children’s physical development, creativity, and emotional well-being. In addition, all classes enjoy family-style dining during meals, fostering independence, social skills, and healthy eating habits. Breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack are served daily and are subsidized by the USDA. Children take an active role in mealtime by helping with preparation, serving, and clean-up, promoting responsibility and a sense of community.
